WHY GIRLS?

Exploitation and trafficking

We know that girls are often targeted in poor communities for the purposes of commercial sex trafficking, labour exploitation, virginity sale, and other forms of exploitation.  Most victims of the commercial sex industry have no formal education.

Only 20% of girls in Cambodia make it to upper secondary school.

This is not because they don't want to finish school but because they have no choice or opportunity. They are denied an education for many reasons, including cultural norms, violence and poor infrastructure, with the number one reason being poverty.

Education = Prevention

Education not only meets the immediate need to keep girls out of vulnerable situations, but also allows them to build a strong foundation for their future full of opportunities, preventing exploitation before it starts.

Investing in her education, health and empowerment today means that she will have the tools to make smart choices that will benefit her life,  the lives of her family, her future children, her community and possibly her nation.
